Garth McLean is coming to Yogawest in Bristol on 13/14th July to teach 2 days of workshops for the AIY.

“Walking the fine line between Courage and Caution” Diagnosed with MS in 1996 Garth has been in remission since 2001 and now shares his powerful practice in therapeutic workshops all over the world. We are delighted to invite him to Bristol for a weekend that will be suitable for teachers, interested students and sufferers of MS and related conditions.

Garth is a Senior Intermediate lll Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher, Yoga Therapist and co-founding board member of Iyengar Yoga Therapeutics, an organisation dedicated to helping people manage diseases and conditions through therapeutic applications of yoga.

Inspired by continual discoveries in practice, Garth continues to refine his experience with annual study at RIMYI since 2000 and is honoured to have assisted in medical classes there under the direct tutelage of the late BKS and Geeta Iyengar. Garth teaches with great exuberance and brings his insight of asana and pranayama on strengthening the body, quietening the mind and the effect this brings to bear on the immune and nervous systems. A wonderful learning opportunity for us all.

In Garth’s own words:

In addition to general classes, these offerings will focus on working with ambulatory persons with Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and other autoimmune/ neurological challenges, symptoms, and related movement disorders.

Garth McLean shares his personal experience of managing his own course of MS and associated symptoms.

Underscoring principles and precautions, we will explore strategies to safely adopt and adapt asana that can increase students’ stability, mobility, strength, flexibility and overall wellbeing, while taking student ability into consideration.

Though not a cure, through practice based application of asana and pranayama, we will explore strategies to build strength, coordination and address ataxia, dysmetria, compromised gait, drop foot, balance, akinesia, dyskinesia, spasticity, cognitive function, optic challenges, bladder and bowel incontinence, weakness, temperature intolerance, depression, fatigue to help create a brighter future.
