National Iyengar Yoga Day 2024

Dear Teacher Members,

National Iyengar Yoga day is taking place on Saturday 20th January 2024. The aim is for the day to raise awareness of Iyengar Yoga and the work of Guruji, and to encourage as many people as possible to attend free taster / beginners classes.

To actively support and encourage our teacher members to take part, AIY will make a contribution of £50.00 towards events you organise for the day.

AIY will add details of your event to its Facebook page and IYUK will also be listing and promoting all events taking place for NIYD as widely as possible.

Please email avoniyengar@gmail.com letting us know what you plan to do and we will make the funds available to you.

'A Shared Space' - a new AIY scheme

In our continued efforts to foster community within our member group and encourage new ways to explore Iyengar Yoga and learn from and with each other, AIY is very excited to be launching ‘A Shared Space’.

What is ‘A Shared Space’?

It is an opportunity for members of our community to host group practice sessions. Spaces offered may be a dedicated yoga studio but may also be a village/church/community hall or simply a suitable practice space within a home. Group practices may be for 4 or 40!

We all know what self-practice is but less familiar or less integrated within our current yoga lives is group practice. After lengthy lockdowns and the movement towards online learning it is important to reconnect and share spaces again; to experience the joy and unification that practising yoga together can bring.

Group practice is a tremendous way to learn and at the same time feel connected with others. They are kind, supportive and respectful spaces. It can be inspiring to see how others practise, how props are used; we can be reminded of different approaches to asana or of those we neglect; a pair of hands can be there to help us. The supportive environment may encourage us to find courage in place of fear, to explore further and delve deeper.

How will it work?

‘A Shared Space’ will begin in January 2022 and we hope that a group practice session will be offered monthly on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

We suggest that hosts give their practice session a theme, for example backbends or Level 2 asana, so although each person’s practice will be self-directed, the explorations and energy will have a common thread. As these will be spaces of self-practice within a group with no-one leading or directing, people would of course be welcome to practise as they choose or what best suits their conditions on the day.

AIY will coordinate, timetable and list details on a dedicated ‘A Shared Space’ page on its website. AIY will also send out monthly reminder emails to its members.

The contact details of each space host will be listed and they (not AIY) will be responsible for all enquiries and the allocation of places for their group practice session.

AIY does not intend for ‘A Shared Space’ to be a fee paying or profit-making endeavour. By way of supporting the scheme and to encourage group practice AIY will contribute £30.00 towards each ‘Shared Space’ regardless of the number of participants.

People may also wish to make a donation to the host venue or to a charity when they participate in a practice session but this is very much by discretion. AIY would suggest a sprinkling of coins and no more than £5.00.

Become part of ‘A Shared Space’

If you would like to offer a space for practice please email avoniyengar@gmail.com and let us know the following details -

type of venue, location, capacity and equipment provided, if any.

We will then contact you to timetable a date, run through further practicalities and discuss a possible theme.

We plan for this scheme to run throughout the year but will timetable quarterly. We are aware that there may be occasions on which an Iyengar event is scheduled after our practice dates have been listed and that a host may wish to attend this. In such instances, a practice date could be rescheduled.

If you have any questions, please email avoniyengar@gmail.com

Spring News 2021

Dear Members,

We hope you are all well and enjoying the onset of Spring. From us, an update of our recent activities, news and plans ahead.

Firooza Workshop – February 2021

Our workshop with Firooza was a great success. We are extremely grateful to Firooza for all that she offered us as well as a great display of equanimity in the face of Sunday’s technical mishaps. Thank you to all those that supported the event by coming. We hope your practices and thought processes have been stimulated as a result.

Over 100 people attended the event each day. We were delighted to be joined by a large number of practitioners from overseas, particularly from South Africa. One of the very positive aspects of zoom is that we have been able to receive teachings from our Indian teachers as well as connecting with the worldwide Iyengar community. It was lovely that the AIY could play a part in this.

IYUK Convention 2021 with Abhijata Iyengar – Bursary scheme

Through a new Bursary fund, the IYUK is this year offering 40 Convention places for those experiencing financial hardship. It hopes that it will remove some of the barriers in accessing the event.

The AIY has made a contribution towards this fund. The Bursary is fully administrated by the IUYK but we encourage our members to apply. Any Iyengar yoga practitioner with at least 18 months’ experience can apply. Click here to apply.

Join the AIY Committee

We are always looking for members to join our small and friendly committee.

It may be that you are interested but unsure of what might be involved in becoming a committee member. There are ‘formal’ committee roles but it is also fantastic to be joined by members who come with new energy, new perspectives and ideas. Do not feel overwhelmed by formality!

If you are interested, we invite you to join us at our next or a future meeting. This would give you the opportunity to meet the current committee, see how we operate and ask any questions. Email avoniyengar@gmail.com

June/July AIY event

We have started planning our next AIY event for early summer. We hope we will be able to gather in both physical space and form and celebrate being together again. We will update you with further details and a ‘Save the Date’ soon.

National Iyengar Yoga Day 18th January 2020

Dear AIY Teacher Member

As you will be aware, 18th January 2020 has been nominated as National Iyengar Yoga Day (see the IY(UK) email of 17/10/19). Iyengar teachers around the country are encouraged to offer free classes and events to raise awareness of Iyengar Yoga.

The AIY are keen to support planned events and consequently are offering a £40 grant towards each class/event run.

Your event does not have to be a class, and you don’t need to be a teacher to run an event: it could be a social event such as a coffee morning or a talk.

To register your event with the AIY, email Diana Penny (diana@yogawest.co.uk) to let us know you are participating, ideally providing the link to your event listed on the IY map (see below). You will get an acknowledgement with information about how to claim after the event.

Diana will distribute flyers and PR information received from the IY to those participating. You are encouraged to take photos on the day and send them along with a brief report and any feedback from attendees of your event to the IY.

This is a great opportunity to publicise Iyengar yoga in the West Country: the more we can all do to spread the word, the more successful the day will be.

The link to list your event on the IY(UK) website is here:

https://iyengaryoga.org.uk/niyd-event-details/

 Participation Encouraged

Whether or not you are offering a class, do you have any ideas of supporting events/pr that you could organise for the NIYD in the AIY area, eg flash yoga mobs, interviews with local media, poster distribution?

Please email diana@yogawest.co.uk if you can get involved.

Diana Penny, on behalf of The AIY Committee

Applications are being invited for the Avon Iyengar Group Bursary to provide financial assistance for those studying at RIMYI. See here for full details.
